Wealth On Fire: A Study of Job's Life Through Devastating Loss
  1. Job is described as blameless, fearing God, and extremely wealthy (Job 1:1-5), yet God allows Satan to test him by removing his prosperity and family (Job 1:8-11). Reflect on the questions raised in the lesson: "If God stopped 'blessing' me, would I stop loving him? Do I love God for Himself alone?" Share honestly—how do material blessings or comforts in your life sometimes influence your devotion to God, and what steps can you take to cultivate love for God regardless of circumstances?
  2. In response to total loss, Job worships God and declares, "The LORD gave me what I had, and the LORD has taken it away. Praise the name of the LORD!" (Job 1:20-22), and later affirms we should accept both good and bad from God's hand (Job 2:10). How does Job's refusal to sin by blaming God or curse Him challenge common reactions to suffering or loss today? Discuss a time when you (or someone you know) faced significant loss—did it draw you closer to trusting God's good control, or tempt you toward resentment or rebellion?
  3. The lesson highlights human assumptions (from Job's friends in chapters 3-31) that goodness leads to success/reward and evil to suffering, yet Job's story shatters this by showing suffering can come even to the righteous. How do these faulty assumptions still appear in modern thinking (e.g., "prosperity gospel" ideas or blaming victims for their hardships)? How does Job's example encourage us to "trust the good control of God" and resist sin during suffering, even when we don't understand why things happen?
  4. Job ultimately repents in humility before God's majesty (Job 42:1-6), having moved from hearing about God to seeing Him. This connects to Paul's words in Philippians 3:7-11, where he counts everything as loss compared to knowing Christ, even desiring to share in Christ's sufferings. In abundance or loss, how can we learn to "treasure Christ" above wealth, health, or security? What practical ways can your life reflect counting other things as "worthless" or "garbage" next to the infinite value of knowing and gaining Christ?
