Read Mark chapters 11 & 12

  • What prophecies does Jesus fulfill in the triumphal entry in Mark 11:1-11? How did the Scriptural Messiah differ from the people’s expectations of Messiah?
  • Read and reflect on Mark 11:12-25. Jesus condemns pretense. Is there any level of pretense in your life? Any discrepancy between your private and public self that you need to confess to God and others?
  • Read and reflect on Mark 11:27-12:12. Jesus condemns people pleasing. Are you driven by what other people think about you? Even to the point of compromising the truth? Something you need to confess to God and others? (see also John 12:42-43 and Galatians 1:10 for more on people pleasing)
  • Read and reflect on Mark 12:13-40. Jesus condemns the power-hungry. Are you driven by power, wealth, and influence? Is there jealousy in your heart when someone else gets the nod and you don’t, or threatens to take what you already have? Something you need to confess to God and others?
  • Read and reflect on Mark 12:41-44. Jesus commends poor faith. The good life is found not in hiding our mistakes (pretense), being liked by others (people pleasing), or amassing power and wealth (power hungry), but rather in facing the reality of our spiritual condition. What can we learn from this poor widow and how does she point to the gospel of Jesus Christ?
