Jesus and the Process of Discipleship

The Gospel of Mark
  • is not a biography of Jesus’ life
  • is not a detailed map of events
  • is not in chronological order
  • is a purpose-driven narrative from the words of Peter

The Gospel of Mark is a call for discipleship in the midst of difficult times.

The Structural Parallels of Mark 5:35-8:30

6:14-16Who is Jesus? 8:27-30
6:31-44Feeding the Multitude 8:1-9
6:45-56Crossing the Lake 4:35-41; 8:10

"Who do you say that I am?"

Mark 8:27-29

27 Jesus and his disciples left Galilee and went up to the villages near Caesarea Philippi. As they were walking along, he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”
28 “Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say you are one of the other prophets.”
29 Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?”
Peter replied, “You are the Messiah.”

To be a disciple of Jesus is to be with Jesus, and to be with Jesus means to be trained for REPRESENTATION.

Mark 3:13-15

13 Afterward Jesus went up on a mountain and called out the ones he wanted to go with him. And they came to him. 14 Then he appointed twelve of them and called them his apostles. They were to accompany him, and he would send them out to preach, 15 giving them authority to cast out demons.

The process of discipleship is experienced through adversity and humility, but always with Jesus.
