Magnify God’s Forgiveness

The theme of God’s forgiveness shines through John 3:1-21 even though the word is never directly used. Here Jesus explains that He came not to condemn but to save. This forgiveness is offered to all who believe, freeing them from the darkness of sin into the light of God’s grace.

Nicodemus’ encounter challenges us to confront our own need for spiritual life and to embrace God’s forgiveness, which transforms our lives through faith in Christ, regardless of our past or present struggles.

Read John 3:1-21

1.  What does Jesus mean by being “born again” in John 3:3-8, and how does this relate to receiving God’s forgiveness?

2.  How does John 3:16-17 highlight God’s love and forgiveness rather than condemnation?
According to John 3:18, what is the result of unbelief?

3.  In John 3:19-21, why do some people prefer darkness over light, and what prevents people today from accepting God’s forgiveness?

Discuss how this relates to Adam and Eve’s response to their own sin.

4.  How does Nicodemus’ nighttime visit reflect our own hesitancy to approach God for forgiveness?

Again, notice how Adam and Eve‘s example after their sin continues throughout history.

5.  What steps can we take to live in the “light” of God’s forgiveness as described in John 3:21, and how does this impact our relationships with others?

Discuss: How does your experience with human forgiveness shape your understanding and application of God’s forgiveness?

Bonus:  Do a word search of “light” and “darkness” in the gospel of John. How many times do those words show up? How are they used?
