Revive Our Hearts
Psalm 85:1-7
1 LORD, you poured out blessings on your land!
You restored the fortunes of Israel.
2 You forgave the guilt of your people—
yes, you covered all their sins.
3 You held back your fury.
You kept back your blazing anger.
4 Now restore us again, O God of our salvation.
Put aside your anger against us once more.
5 Will you be angry with us always?
Will you prolong your wrath to all generations?
6 Won’t you revive us again,
so your people can rejoice in you?
7 Show us your unfailing love, O LORD,
and grant us your salvation.
Our corporate need for revival begins with our individual prayer for revival.
Psalm 85:6
Won’t you revive us again,
so your people can rejoice in you?
"Religious affections are comprised of the heart’s vigorous, joyful love for God and delight in His holiness—not just thoughts or feelings, but a transformed will that pursues Christ above all."
- J. Edwards; A Treatise Concerning Religious Affections (1746)
Ezekiel 37:5–6a
This is what the Sovereign LORD says: "Look! I am going to put breath into you and make you live again! I will put flesh and muscles on you and cover you with skin. I will put breath into you, and you will come to life.”
The preparation for revival is determined by the posture of our hearts.
Isaiah 57:15
The high and lofty one who lives in eternity,
the Holy One, says this:
“I live in the high and holy place
with those whose spirits are contrite and humble.
I restore the crushed spirit of the humble
and revive the courage of those with repentant hearts.
“When the Spirit of God is poured out… it breaks the heart with sorrow for sin and opens it to the Lord Jesus.”
-J. Edwards; The Distinguishing Marks of a Work of the Spirit of God" (1741)
Isaiah 57:17-18a
17 I was angry,
so I punished these greedy people.
I withdrew from them,
but they kept going on their own stubborn way.
18 I have seen what they do,
but I will heal them anyway!
I will lead them.
Prepare for Revival
Take the Humble Approach (Isaiah 57:15)
Check your Position (Isaiah 57:17; Psalm 85:8)
Test your fuel (Psalm 85:6)
"The Holy Spirit… works in the hearts of the saints to revive and inflame their love to God and to Jesus Christ… He revives the languishing flame of holy love."
