The Sufficiency of Scripture: Sola Scriptura

Read: 2 Timothy 3:1-17

  1. Compare 2 Timothy 3:16a and 2 Peter 1:20-21.  Luther stated, “What is asserted without the Scriptures… may be held as an opinion, but need not be believed.” What competing “voices” (e.g., culture, personal feelings, or traditions) challenge your trust in Scripture as the final authority? How can you practically test teachings or decisions against Scripture?
  2. Read Matthew 15:3, 6 and Acts 17:11. The texts encourage surrendering beliefs and behavior to Scripture, which teaches, convicts, corrects, and trains us. Share a time when Scripture corrected or guided you in a tough decision (e.g., in family, work, or ethics). How can memorizing a verse like Psalm 119:11 help you align your life with God’s Word?
  3. Read Ephesians 4:11-12 and 1 Peter 4:10-11. The Scripture equips us for every good work, including ministry and service, as Luther affirmed, “The Scriptures are perfectly clear… for what we ought to believe and do.” How has Scripture prepared you for a specific calling or act of service (e.g., teaching, helping, or witnessing)? What steps can you take to join a ministry team or Bible study to apply Scripture’s guidance?
  4. Read 2 Timothy 2:15 and Psalm 119:9-11. Scripture equips us like a first responder with every tool needed for Christ’s mission. How does diligently studying Scripture, like Timothy, help you live with purpose or service? Share an example of how a specific Bible passage has equipped you for a ministry role or purposeful living, and discuss how your group supports each other in studying God’s Word.
  5. Read 2 Timothy 3:16-17 and Psalm 119:18. We must read, study, and obey Scripture boldly. What practical habits (e.g., daily reading, group study, or memorization) can you adopt to make Scripture your sole authority? How can your small group hold each other accountable to reject extra traditions or cultural pressures, as Luther and the Reformers did, and depend on Scripture alone?
