Taking the Field
For many people, this is the most wonderful time of the year. High school football teams are back under the lights on Fridays, Saturdays bring excitement at the collegiate level, and the NFL kicks off soon on Sundays. We have seen statistics that report 70% of Americans say football is their favorite sport.
As football season kicks off, many of us get excited about watching our favorite teams suit up, take the field, and give it their all. Most enjoy the fandom that comes with the game, and we wear the colors and defend our teams well! We admire the discipline, teamwork, and strategy it takes to win.
But just as athletes train, study playbooks, and stay focused on their goal, we are called to be spiritually disciplined in our walk with Jesus. The Christian life isn’t a spectator sport -- it requires daily commitment, time in God’s Word, prayer, and living out our faith with purpose. Just as a team can’t win without discipline, effort, and unity, we don’t grow spiritually without engaging fully in our relationship with Christ and the community of believers around us.
Every athlete has a goal: to win. Our goal as followers of Jesus is to become more like Him, to glorify God, and to share the hope we have in Him with others. The stakes are much higher than a championship; we’re playing for eternal impact. So, as you cheer for your team this season, let it also remind you of your greater calling. Stay spiritually fit, support one another like true teammates in Christ, and remember that victory in Jesus is already ours because He has won! Therefore, go and make disciples!
Don’t forget the Discipleship Fair is happening again this Sunday! This is a great opportunity to commit to actively engaging with our fellow believers as we discussed above. Join us to take the field and make disciples.
